I was devastated to learn this morning that Garfield Park Conservatory is lying in ruins after a hailstorm. Photographs reveal shards of glass everywhere, strewn hazardously throughout the plants. And they say that the fern room is in grave danger as it’s now exposed to the heat and sun of a Chicago summer.
Above is a photograph taken overlooking the fern room on a winter’s day — the fog being the condensation on the lens before the camera warms up and acclimates to the conservatory’s humidity.
Oh this makes me so sad! Having lived in Chicago for several years, the Garfield Park Conservatory was a haven — a place to see green in a dull, concrete winter, in a neighborhood that wasn’t overrun with people.
